Editing (7) : The Cassette Tape

When editing our final opening I decided to make the background music sound as though it was coming from a cassette tape. In my head I had the vision of it being something that Josh and Emma used to listen to or were both very familiar with. The way it sounds due to the effect works well as it feels unnatural and strange. I have included the sound effects of someone (who we know to be Josh) inserting the tape and pressing play. This therefore makes the effect more obvious. Just before we see the hidden figure for the first time, and just before Josh says "anyone could be out there", he stops the tape. This allows the audience to prepare for and expect something to happen. Furthermore, it allows them to ask "why did the tape stop?"

Additionally, at the end of the opening, just before we see Josh get taken, the cassette tape seems to parallel that of the events happening. as we hear Emma ask Josh "What's happening, what's going on", the audience are aware of both that and the glitch and breaking of the cassette. I thought this would add more suspense and unease as the noise it makes feels uncomfortable and unpleasing to the ear. It then continues to glitch after Josh has been taken, which I also thought would be effective.

The way the cassette tape glitches and falters could imply the "glitches" and faults in the relationship between Emma and Josh; which to some could help foreshadow that their relationship will not end up being successful. I thought this idea would be a very interesting and subtle way of suggesting this.
